As the last link of the hi-fi chain, loudspeakers are at the mercy of incoming signals. However, distortions introduced by loudspeakers tend to be the most obvious. It's plain common sense that no matter how good your amplifier or CD player are, without a good set of speakers, your system will never shine. The average loudspeaker comprises an enclosure containing two drive units. Inside the box, a simple electrical circuit (cross over or dividing network) splits in the incoming full-frequency-range signal into the right portions for specific drive units to handle: highs to the "tweeter," lows to the "woofer." When searching for a pair of loudspeakers for your system, there are several key factors that you should pay attention to. The major one being to match the appropriate type of speakers to your amplifier. Some speakers are harder to drive than others, and this can lead to the possibility of overloading an amp that's too weak to drive them. So it is important for you to check out the specs before you buy. See if they are suitable for your hi-fi system. The best thing to do is to have the shop (if possible) set up the configuration that you want and to demo it. In any case, here are some of the specs that you should look out for:

Sensitivity (dB/W): How much sound results for a given electrical input - the higher the figure, the louder the speaker.
Impedence (Ohms): Indicates how much resistance the speakers presents to an amplifier. The lower the value, the more demand it puts on the amp. Bass From (Hz): The lowest frequency that a speaker can reproduce effectively
Type: Loudspeakers usually come in two basic forms, floorstanders or not-floorstanders (shit, but there's no other way in putting it ... err ... Please allow myself to introduce...myself). Floorstanders require no stand mounts, whereas the other type do or can be placed on bookshelves. They are sometimes called monitor speakers or bookshelfers.
